Wedding Ceremony Music Planning Help!

Does the thought of choosing the music for your wedding ceremony make your head spin? I am here to simplify that process for you! After a few decades as a Chicago wedding pianist, I’ve got this down to a science.

SIDE NOTE: You don’t HAVE to choose all of these songs. If you feel like just telling me what vibe/ambiance you are going for because you just can’t make one more decision, I can choose some or all of the songs for you. It will be beautiful either way!

Here are the parts of your wedding ceremony that generally need piano music:

  1. Prelude – This is the 20-30 minutes of music played as guests arrive. You don’t choose every song for this period of time, but you can tell me your favorite genres of music from my list (or just genres to avoid).
  2. Optional: Seating of the Parents – Some people like to choose a special song to play at this time. Otherwise, the parents can be seated during the last song of the prelude.
  3. Attendants’ Processional – The song that plays when the bridal attendants walk down the aisle.
  4. Bride/Groom’s Processional – The song that plays when the bride or groom walks down the aisle.
  5. Optional: Any special ceremony tradition (unity candle, unity sand) – Only about 25 percent of my couples choose to have a unity ceremony, but a little piano music during that time is nice.
  6. Optional: A congregational hymn (for a church wedding)
  7. Recessional – The song when the couple and the bridal party exit back down the aisle. This song is usually loud and upbeat. Time to PARTY!!
  8. Postlude – the music that plays until all of the guests have left the ceremony area. This typically doesn’t take long unless you are having a large church wedding with a receiving line or are dismissing row by row. Like the prelude, you don’t need to choose specific songs for this time, just genres. This music is usually more upbeat than the prelude music.
